Double Diamond

The Double Diamond is a design process model with two phases — finding the right problem, then finding the right solution — each involving divergent and convergent thinking.

Why it matters

It reminds teams to explore broadly before narrowing, and to understand the problem fully before rushing to solutions.

In depth

Created by the UK Design Council, the model's four stages are Discover, Define, Develop, and Deliver. The first diamond is about the problem; the second about the solution. The shape captures the rhythm of opening up to many ideas, then focusing down.

Real-world example

First a team explores many possible problems and converges on one ('users abandon checkout'), then explores many solutions and converges on a design.
