Grid System

A grid system is an invisible framework of columns and rows used to align and organize content consistently.

Why it matters

Grids bring order and rhythm to a layout, making designs feel balanced and professional while speeding up decision-making.

In depth

Borrowed from print and graphic design, grids define columns, gutters, and margins. They create alignment and consistency, especially across responsive breakpoints. A good grid is a guide, not a cage — designers break it intentionally for emphasis.

Real-world example

A 12-column grid lets a designer place a sidebar across 4 columns and main content across 8, keeping everything aligned across pages.
