Moodboard
A moodboard is a curated collection of visual references — images, colors, type, and textures — gathered to explore or communicate a possible design direction. It captures a feeling before any real design work begins.
Why it matters
It is a fast, low-cost way to align on the look and feel of a project before committing time to polished designs. Showing a direction is often clearer and quicker than describing it in words.
In depth
The best moodboards make an argument rather than just collecting pretty images: every reference is there to say something specific about the intended direction. A common mistake is gathering things you simply like, which produces an attractive board that gives no real guidance. Treat each image as evidence for a choice, and be ready to explain why it earned its place.
Real-world example
Before redesigning an app, a team pins screenshots, photos, and color swatches to a Figma board to agree on whether the result should feel playful, minimal, or premium.
