UI Design
Tag
A tag is a standalone label that categorizes or describes a piece of content, and is often selectable or removable.
Why it matters
Tags help people group, filter, and find things, making large collections of content easier to scan and sort.
In depth
Unlike a badge, which is attached to a parent element and purely informational, a tag stands on its own and frequently invites interaction — selecting it to filter, or removing it with a small close control. Keep tag labels short and consistent so a set of them stays easy to scan. When tags are removable, make the remove control large enough to tap comfortably.
Real-world example
On a blog post, tags like 'Design', 'Accessibility', and 'Beginner' let readers jump to related articles by clicking one.
Badge = attached & informational; tag = standalone & removable.
