Easing
Easing is the way an animation speeds up or slows down rather than moving at a constant rate. It shapes how natural a motion feels.
Why it matters
Motion with no easing looks robotic, because almost nothing in the real world starts and stops instantly. The right easing makes interfaces feel physical and smooth.
In depth
As a rule of thumb, use ease-out for things entering the screen, since decelerating into place feels like settling, and ease-in for things leaving, since accelerating away feels like exiting. Linear easing — a constant speed — is usually reserved for things like looping spinners. Picking the wrong curve is subtle but real: the motion plays, yet something feels slightly off.
Real-world example
A menu that slides in and decelerates as it settles into place feels gentle and arrived, while one moving at a flat, even speed feels mechanical.
