UI Design

Microinteraction

A microinteraction is a small, contained moment of interaction — a single animation, toggle, or response to a user action.

Why it matters

These tiny details provide feedback, communicate state, and add personality. Together they make a product feel polished and alive.

In depth

Coined by Dan Saffer, microinteractions have a trigger, rules, feedback, and loops. Done well, they confirm actions and guide attention without demanding it. Done poorly or excessively, they distract. Restraint keeps them helpful rather than gimmicky.

Real-world example

The little animation when you 'like' a post, or a toggle that smoothly slides and changes color, are microinteractions.
