Empty State

An empty state is what a screen shows when there's no content yet — before a user has added data or when results are absent.

Why it matters

First impressions often happen in empty states. Done well, they guide and encourage; ignored, they leave users staring at a blank, confusing screen.

In depth

Empty states appear at first use, after clearing data, or when a search returns nothing. Strong ones explain what belongs there, why it's empty, and what to do next. They are an underrated chance to teach and motivate.

Real-world example

A to-do app showing 'No tasks yet — add your first one' with a friendly illustration and a button turns emptiness into onboarding.
