Fidelity

Fidelity is the level of detail and realism in a design artifact, from rough low-fidelity sketches to polished high-fidelity mockups.

Why it matters

Choosing the right fidelity saves time. Low fidelity invites bold feedback; high fidelity tests look, feel, and detailed interactions.

In depth

Fidelity spans visual detail, content realism, and interactivity. Early on, low fidelity keeps ideas cheap and feedback honest. Later, high fidelity validates the polished experience. Matching fidelity to the stage of work prevents wasted effort and misdirected critique.

Real-world example

A napkin sketch is low fidelity; a pixel-perfect Figma mockup with real copy and colors is high fidelity.
